Reflective cycling: safely visible in the dark

In November it is already dark at 17:00. You leave work, get on your bike and ride into the dusk — exactly when traffic is at its busiest. In those dark months your daily commute turns into the most dangerous stretch of your day. Not because you cycle any worse, but because drivers simply see you too late.

Reflective cycling solves that. Where a bike light shows one point of light, reflectivity makes your whole silhouette light up the moment headlights fall on you. You are no longer a vague shadow at the side of the road, but a clear, recognisable cyclist. That difference of a couple of seconds is exactly the room a driver needs to brake.

Cycling in the Netherlands means cycling in the dark, for a large part of the year. From late October well into February you ride your commute both ways in twilight or darkness. Add rain, fog and wet road surfaces, and the contrast between you and your surroundings all but disappears.

The problem is not that drivers are not paying attention. The problem is that a cyclist in dark clothing only becomes visible at a distance that is too short to react safely. A car doing 50 km/h covers almost 30 metres in two seconds. If a driver only notices you at 20 or 30 metres, the decision to brake has already been taken too late.

Visibility is not a matter of comfort or style, then — it is the margin between being seen in time and not. And you do not widen that margin with more light of your own, but with reflectivity that bounces back the light others already have.

The difference between active and passive visibility

There are two ways to stand out in the dark, and you need both.

Active visibility is light you produce yourself: your front and rear lights. Legally required, indispensable, but limited. A lamp is a single point of light. From the side — at junctions, driveways and roundabouts, exactly where things go wrong — a lamp says little about where your bike begins and ends.

Passive visibility is reflectivity: material that bounces light back towards its source. It uses no battery, never switches off and works from every angle that light falls on. Reflectivity fills exactly the gap your lights leave: your side profile and your shape.

The safest cyclist combines both. Light to show that you are there, reflectivity to show what you are: a person on a bike.

How reflectivity works: lighting up 360° from around 150 metres

Reflective material works differently from an ordinary white jacket. Fluorescent yellow stands out well in daylight, but in the dark — with no daylight to react to — it turns as grey as everything around it. Reflectivity does the opposite: the darker the surroundings, the stronger the effect.

Quality reflectivity bounces light back towards its source. The headlights of an approaching car hit your reflective material, and that light travels back to the driver's eyes. That makes you appear to light up — not faintly, but brightly, from as far as around 150 metres. That is a generous, comfortable distance in which to be noticed in time and slow down calmly.

Accidents rarely happen head-on or straight from behind. They happen at junctions, while turning and on roundabouts — moments when a car approaches you from the side. That is precisely where lights on their own fall short.

That is why 360° reflectivity counts: visibility from every side, not just front and back. Think of reflectivity on your sides, on moving parts such as your ankles, and on your luggage. Moving reflectivity — your pedalling legs, your turning wheels — draws extra attention, because the human eye picks up movement faster than a stationary point. A driver then recognises it straight away: this is a cyclist, not a bollard.

Where do you put reflectivity for the best effect?

  • Low and moving: your ankles and feet move at the eye level of headlights and stand out more. Reflectivity here is one of the most effective places.
  • On your back and bag: your largest, most constant surface facing the traffic behind you. A reflective cover over your bike bag turns your luggage into a visibility surface.
  • All around your bike: frame, spokes and pedals all add to your side profile.
  • At eye level: reflectivity high on your body and on your helmet sits right in a driver's field of view.
